I adore this scene for so many reasons, but the utter betrayal on Gaius’s face when he yells “Butterfingers” sort of breaks my heart.  (I also remain convinced that they had to have had at least one sexual encounter at some point, and this is basically Gaius’s way of telling Felix he was lousy in bed as the only insult that can come to his mind at this moment.  Either that or the “Butterfingers” thing is ad-libbed and AJ is ducking his head so he doesn’t laugh.  Or both.)

But this is one of those places where the Sweet!Eight retcon doesn’t work for me.  Because if Gaius wanted to discredit Felix, yelling that he was frakking a Cylon on New Caprica (and what she did) would do the job nicely.  I can fanwank it a bit, saying that it was certainly something Gaius was willing to threaten Felix with, but there’s a part of him that cares enough about Felix that he won’t shout it out to the entire Fleet.  Or he decided that exposing his own knowledge of the Eight killing people would look worse for him than Felix, and just simply saying Felix slept with her would be met with indifference or even disbelief, depending on how Felix chooses to defend himself. 

(The Sweet!Eight retcon also bothers me a bit because it really does change Gaius’s character a bit.  Before that, Gaius was powerless to stop what was going on.  He could protest, but it wasn’t going to change anything.  But with the Sweet!Eight thing, he could have tried to stop it, at very little (if any) risk to himself.  All he had to do was tell Felix what she was doing, and Felix could have worked out a way to not give her names anymore.  But he let it continue, knowing that Felix probably didn’t know and knowing what it would do to Felix if he did know.  Gaius is a lot of things, but cruel isn’t one of them.  Again, I can fanwank- maybe Gaius didn’t find out what was really going on until he was on the basestar or something.  (Oooh- is there fic out there like that?)  But I do wish we’d had a scene dealing with this in more detail.)

(And I agree about the many reasons to dislike the Sweet Eight retcon, though I do try to fanwank that it was something Gaius found out about after the fact or had no way of getting involved in.)
