While my feelings about the BSG series finale have morphed over time - from blindly enjoying it to being able to see all its little flaws, one part of it that I have never ceased to find moving and tragically fascinating is the flashback about Gaius Baltar’s relationship with his father.

You see just how his father still has total emotional power over him, despite everything he’s done to control their relationship. James Callis carries the whole emotional arc of this scene on his face - from cool detachment to years of pent-up frustration, to finally, what do I have to do to matter to him?

Caprica’s quietly pained, uncertain expression here echoes the entirety of my feelings every time I rewatch this scene.

Callis really does own this incredibly awful and awkward scene, but my favorite is Caprica (shockingly,) because you can tell she’s back there like “is this allowed? can humans actually do this to their parents? because I feel like it’s probably not okay.”

Filed under battlestar galactica my beautiful bookends and their flawless fucking arc this commentary yes and I just love how non-gracefully Gaius does the caretaker thing all this ugly frustration and bitterness pouring out of him and it's so sad it's so human
